Dublin’s famous
Trinity
College was
originally founded by Queen Elizabeth I back in 1592
also has lots to interest visitors. Highlights include
witnessing the historic ‘Book of Kells’ and the
Dublin Experience, an audiovisual presentation
detailing the history of the city. However, just a
short stroll around the grounds is an experience in
itself thanks to some wonderful architecture.
There’s also Dublin
Castle, which
although not a classically beautiful castle has its
own interesting tale to tell. Built in 1204 under the
order of King John, the castle has acted a prison and
as home of the British viceroys of Ireland, yet today
all that remains of the original structure is the
Record Tower, giving a bizarre mix of architectural
styles. The State Apartments are particularly
impressive and certainly worth viewing.
Phoenix
Park
is one of the world’s largest parks and comprises
beautiful open expanses with deer roaming about, to
colourful gardens and serene lakes. The must see sight
here include Dublin Zoo and the impressive Phoenix
Column. If you don’t fancy walking you can always
take the more romantic option of hiring a horse drawn
carriage to take you round instead.
When it comes to
a spot of retail therapy Grafton Street is Dublin’s
answer to Oxford Street but with the added advantage
of being pedestrianised, giving a more relaxed air to
the proceedings, as do the numerous buskers along the
route, amiably sharing their music and poetry with
passers by. The one shop though that everyone makes
for is Brown Thomas, the long-standing department
store just bursting with designer laden temptation.
Talking of
temptation no visit to Dublin is complete without
seeing The
Guinness Storehouse.
Unsurprisingly the production of Guinness has had a
huge affect on the local wealth over its incredibly
successful 250-year-old history and a visit here
includes a complimentary pint of the black stuff to
ensure that everyone acquires a taste for the local
brew, if they haven’t already that is!
